Hernia Repair
A Hernia is a defect or weakness in the muscle or abdominal wall that allows fat or organs to protrude through and bulge. Most commonly, hernias occur at the inner groin (called inguinal hernia), the outer groin (called femoral hernias), at the belly button (called umbilical hernia), the abdomen (called ventral hernia), or at the upper stomach (called hiatal hernia). Normally hernias don’t bother you, but there are some cases where they can be quite painful and require medical surgery for hernia repair. There is also a risk of intestinal strangulation – a situation in which the intestine becomes stuck in the hole and begins to die off – and this can be life threatening if not treated.
What would cause a Hernia?
Hernias have multiple causes. They can be:
Congenital: These are hernias that you are born with.
Incisional: These hernias can occur after a previous surgery in the incision.
Acquired: Heavy lifting, chronic constipation and coughing normally lead to this type of hernia.
How is a hernia surgically treated?
Dr. Shakov normally treats hernias laparoscopically – which means it is done through small incisions with the assistance of a camera. In some cases, it may be necessary to switch to an “open” surgical method where a larger incision is needed to complete the surgical hernia repair. Dr. Shakov always does everything possible to avoid an open surgery for hernia repair, but the patient’s safety takes precedence over any cosmetic issues around scarring and he will change methods if he deems it medically necessary.
Where is the hernia surgery performed at?
Dr. Emil Shakov is a board certified general surgeon in NJ who performs hernia repair surgery using laparoscopic surgery in Monmouth County and Ocean County New Jersey for inguinal, ventral, umbilical and incisional hernias.
